Pirates Invade Silverton for the 2008 Cardboard Derby! Seven entrants comprised of individuals and teams were warned during the registration period that the judges for the event included the County Coroner, Head Grave Digger and an ambulance driver. Not to be discouraged, they fearlessly signed waiver forms and dragged their crafts up the steep slope of Kendall Mountain Recreation Area for timed runs.
This year’s theme for the Snowscape celebration was, “Pirates of the San Juans” and the entrants rose to the creative challenge. Rumors had swirled in Silverton like the drifting snow that competition would be as fierce as the winter. |
|
The entrants did not disappoint with an eventual tie for first place for creativity between past champion Cliff Pohlman and newcomer Corwin Coates.
Coates & Crewe built a sliding craft named Tortuga, that was creative and very fast on the race course. This detailed rendition of a pirate’s cove complete with harbor, buildings and Depp cut-out won second in the race with a time of 12.18 seconds! Extra points earned in the race closed the slight creative gap.
Cliff Pohlman pulled out all creative stops this year with a dazzling three-masted cardboard caravel, the S.S.Sheri Lynne. No one anticipated the eventual mutiny that took place on the high slopes |

when 1st Mate Nick Pohlman abandoned ship at the starting gate. The good ship proved quite snow worthy and stayed intact, even after running over the head judge at the finish line.
One of the sturdier crafts of the day was the S.S. Triangle piloted by Malcolm MacDougall and Chris Higgins. It did well until near the end of the course when a gradual port list mandated an emergency maneuver to starboard which overturned the stout ship.
In all, the contestants and crowd had a very enjoyable day on the slopes in Silverton for the KSJC 2008 Cardboard Derby.
