KSJC CARDBOARD DERBY RULES

1. All Cardboard Derby crafts must be constructed solely of cardboard, tape, string, glue and paper. Absolutely NO wood structures or metal of any kind, fiberglass or plastic or composite and etc. of any kind will be allowed. Waxes and speed coatings are allowed. Plastic bottoms and accessories are allowed if safe. No artificial propulsion.

2. Teams may consist of up to four pre-registered people, the maximum that can be carried on a craft at one time. One person is designated the pilot, who must remain on the craft during the event and finish the course with the craft.

3 . Cardboard Derby craft must have functional braking controls. Pilots and passengers may slow the craft by any safe means. There must be at least one breaking device per registered pilot/passenger.  Uncontrolled crafts will be disqualified

4. Pilot/passengers must be 21 years of age or older. Younger participants must have a parent/guardian sign a waiver.

5 . Pilots/passengers must wear non-hazardous clothing or costumes. Clothing must be appropriate for safety reasons (no spiked shoes, long scarves or confining clothing will be allowed). Participants are encouraged to wear protective clothing including goggles and padding. Helmets must be worn.

6. All crafts must be constructed with safety in mind. Any craft deemed to be unsafe may be disqualified by the event committee prior to the event and not allowed to compete. Crafts must not be potentially dangerous to pilots/passengers, other contestants, or spectators. Event organizers and sponsors accept no responsibility for the safety of any craft or the conduct or actions of any team.

7. The decisions of the event committee or judges concerning awards, disqualification or anything else related to the event are FINAL.

8. Unsportsmanlike conduct is immediate grounds for disqualification.

9. Every participant must read and sign a liability waiver form prior to the event. Those who have not signed a waiver will not be permitted to participate.

10. All crafts must provide quick and easy exit for all pilots/passengers. No one is allowed to be strapped in, confined or contained in the craft.  No enclosures or other hazardous designs will be allowed.

 

 

Competition & Scoring

 

Points will be awarded in the following categories:

A. Winners of the race (by time) :

1.  First: 100 points

2.  Second: 80 points

3.  Third: 70 points

4.  Fourth: 60 pts.

 

B. Artistic Merit: Variable up to a maximum of 30 pts.

 

C. Technical Innovation: Variable up to a maximum of 30 pts. 

 

D. Musical Merit: Maximum: Variable up to a maximum of 30 pts. 

 

E. Team Spirit: Maximum: Variable up to a maximum of 25 pts.

 

(Ties will be broken by a sudden-death race ).

 

Winners will be:            First Place in the Overall Competition (based on total points),

Second Overall Competition,

 

Race Winner

Race Second Place

 

An act of sabotage will automatically disqualify the offenders.
