White Hoe works caused significant traffic disruption in Douglas yesterday
Manx Utilities has been defending a road closure in Douglas while it carries out 'essential maintenance'.
The Old Castletown Road is closed between White Hoe and The Nunnery until 25 March, and it caused significant traffic disruption in the capital yesterday (Monday 9 March).
Manx Utilities says the work is to replace a large access cover above an underground chamber which is around six metres long and three metres deep.
The chamber contains key valves for the wastewater main running from Douglas to Meary Veg.
It says the cover must be removed and reinstated in multiple precisely aligned sections with time for the new concrete to cure, meaning a full road closure is essential.
The utility provider has apologised for the inconvenience caused.
